The Thursday Game 1/24/19 – Something Big is Up!
Recap of January 24 in the year of our Lord 2019 –
Correction: Because we leveled last time, we have taken a long rest. Our Ranger was unable to join us today.
We explore the rooms to the east and find nothing but corpses. Clearly, there have been on-going battles between the live and undead that have decimated both sides. We head back to the throne room to explore south. Eventually, we find a room where the river flows into a sinkhole that drops forty feet. A chain ladder leads to a room below. The river runs roughly west to east. Heading east, we enter a large, watery cavern.
We hear chanting and the rattle of bones. Carefully, we make our way through the shadows to see an island in the middle of an underground lake. On the island, figures move about distractedly piling up recently slaughtered corpses, A closer look reveals a group of undead: two cultists of Orcus, one undead, one drake and one large zombie rotter. Further north, we can just see two live drakes. One of the cultists raises two undead from the pile and they head north to battle the drakes.
After a whispered discussion, the party determines that the corpses must be destroyed lest we face a never-ending army of undead. We seize the opportunity for a coordinated surprise attack while the undead are preoccupied with the skirmish to the north. A volley of ranged attacks hits the undead; a sacred flame, eldritch blast, moonbeam and javelin hit the enemy with varying degrees of success. With great precision, the Monk throws one of the precious vials of Alchemist’s Fire onto the pile of corpses which explodes into a fireball.
The Warlock hits the cultist with an eldritch blast and kills him. Clutching her holy symbol, the Cleric evokes her Beer Mug of Doom™ and sends it against the drake. We have learned the pain that is acid breath and all attack the drake. With a final “bonk” of the Beer Mug, it falls. The Druid adjusts her moonbeam across the island to do further damage. The Monk turns his attention to the zombie rotter who quickly goes down. The Beer Mug slays the last undead.
From the north, we hear a titanic bellow, more chanting and then an ominous shuffle as something large moves. Our view into the cavern is blocked by a wall of rocks so the Monk slips into the shadows and reappears in the cavern. He sees a scattering of corpses, a cultist of Orcus and a reanimated adult black dragon! It’s the messy end-of-adventure boss fight! The Monk casts silence on the enemy. The cultist looks to the dragon and menacingly points to the Monk. The dragon attacks the Monk and fears the Paladin. The Warlock blasts the dragon. The dragon hits the Warlock and the Cleric. Druid casts faerie fire. The Warlock kills the cultist; just the dragon now! Paladin shakes off fear and hits for a huge amount of damage. The dragon casts winged buffet and the Druid is knocked dead. The Warlock shakes off fear and casts eldritch blast. With a final mighty call to Bahamut, the Paladin casts divine smite and the dragon is vanquished at last! We revive the Druid and gather in the dragon’s lair to recuperate for a long rest. Loot will be revealed after we recover. The party discusses next moves. One thing is certain, we are leaving this fortress forever!
