The Heist!
The Saturday game, recapping 2/27/21 – We have signed a contract to help Smiler the Defiler. The devil Bitter Breath stole his cash and his crew. If we help Smiler create a distraction while he steals the money back, he will point us in the direction of a balor or similar creature from which we can get the blood to appease Mordenkainen.
Bitter Breath is holed up in a fortress on the River Styx. Upon arrival, the Archer gets invisibility and scopes out things from the sky. Behind a closed gate sits four war machines and lots of hobgoblins. A tent in the middle of camp is the probable quarters of Bitter Breath and his captains; Smiler will be targeting that area for the loot.
A turret on each corner of the fortress is manned (hobgoblinned?) by a gunner and a lookout. After a strategy discussion, we decide the best way to attack is to split into two parties. Magic users will teleport with fighters to try to take over a tower. The remaining party will crash through the gate on our war machine Large Marge. Smiler will follow behind on his motorcycle.
A long, messy fight ensues, but we manage to wipe out most of the camp. Once Smiler has the loot, we retreat to take a long rest. Smiler is well-pleased with our performance and rewards us with fifty soul coins. He also tells us to keep the stolen war machines. Most importantly, he marks the location of Arkhan’s Tower on our map. He tells us Arkhan the Cruel can help us procure a vial of blood. He bids us adieu before we head back to Fort Knucklebone. Once there, we pay for upgrades to the war machines and plot our next moves. All this action makes us feel more experienced!
